About Us
Message From Our Principal
PS/MS 15, The Institute for Environmental Learning was founded in 1995 when our brand new building opened its doors to staff and students. Initially, the school was intended for elementary students, but over time the opportunity to develop into a K-8 model was welcomed. Our school has seen a variety of partnerships, programs, celebrations, and successes and we look to continue that trajectory into the 21st Century. Our goal is to provide students, staff and parents the opportunity for collaboration and teamwork, provide real-world learning experiences that expand upon our rich curriculum offerings, and the time and space for critical-thinking and discussions.
We believe that deep learning occurs when students have the time and space to engage in discussion and inquiry on topics that are connected and meaningful to them. We want to support the development of students who are able to become active and involved members of their community, and we do this through learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom.
Our staff is committed to providing a positive and respectful learning environment, by holding themselves and students accountable to high expectations for learning and behavior.
The Institute for Environmental Learning is an amazing place with committed students, staff and families who partner together to support our community of learners and leaders!

We encourage active participation and exploration by placing special value on personal growth and development. It is our intent to educate young people who will strive for excellence and be college and career ready. Our expectations will be for every child to reach their highest potential through our home-school community.
Our Vision
The “Community of Learners and Leaders” at the Institute for Environmental Learning at PS/MS 15 seeks to provide an educational environment where our students will:
- Be life-long learners and leaders
- Be productive & prepared to succeed in College and Career Readiness
- Possess esteem for self, others, and environment
We firmly believe that better schools shape better tomorrows. We are committed to maintaining PS/MS 15 as “An Institute of Excellence.” Where all children can and will learn.
Instructional Focus
If students are provided opportunities to engage in rigorous learning tasks that invite them to make their thinking visible, then they will strengthen their ability to engage in authentic student-to-student discourse and provide peers with meaningful and effective feedback.
